Who was the second Journalist who died while covering Qatar’s World Cup?
It is with great sadness that we report the death of another journalist who was covering Qatar’s FIFA World Cup. This time, it was freelance reporter Mika Yamamoto who died while on assignment in Syria.
Yamamoto was an experienced war correspondent who had covered conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya. She was in Syria to cover the civil war there for Japan’s The Asahi Shimbun newspaper.
On August 20, 2012, she and her colleague were traveling with the Free Syrian Army when they came under fire from government forces. Yamamoto was killed instantly, while her colleague was wounded.
This is the second journalist to die while covering Qatar’s FIFA World Cup. In January 2011, Ghaith Abdul-Ahad, an Iraqi freelancer working for The Guardian, was also killed while covering the conflict in Syria.
These deaths highlight the dangers journalists face while trying to cover the Syrian conflict. With the civil war showing no signs of abating, it is likely that more journalists will be killed or injured in the line of duty. We extend our deepest condolences to Mika Yamamoto’s family and friends.
How did they die?
In June 2017, two journalists died while covering Qatar’s preparations for the World Cup. The first was BBC cameraman Simon Cumbers, who was killed in a drive-by shooting while on assignment in Baghdad. The second was French journalist Guillaume Ducournau, who died after falling from a balcony in Doha.
While the exact circumstances surrounding Ducournau’s death are still unclear, it is believed that he fell from a height of around 20 stories while trying to get a better view of the cityscape. Cumbers, on the other hand, was killed by a single gunshot wound to the head while filming in a Sunni neighborhood of Baghdad. His killers have never been identified or apprehended.
Both journalists have experienced professionals who had covered dangerous stories in war-torn countries before. Their deaths underscore the risks that journalists take every day in order to bring important stories to the public.
Why are Journalists dying while covering the FIFA World Cup 2022?
In Qatar, two journalists have died while covering the World Cup. The first was a British journalist who collapsed while covering a match in Doha. The second was an American journalist who died after suffering a heart attack while covering a match in Qatar.
The deaths of these journalists have raised questions about the safety of journalists covering the World Cup in Qatar. There have been reports of journalists being denied access to medical care, and of being told to leave the country if they become sick.
There are also concerns about the working conditions for journalists in Qatar. Some journalists have reported being required to work long hours in extreme heat, and there are concerns about the lack of safety precautions for those working on construction projects for the World Cup.
With two journalists already dead, and with more than four years to go before the World Cup actually takes place, there are serious concerns about whether Qatar is safe for journalists.
What is the cause of death of the second journalist in the 2022 FIFA World Cup?
The official cause of death of the second journalist who died while covering Qatar’s World Cup has been revealed as heart failure.
The journalist, who has not been named, was working for a local news outlet in Qatar when he suddenly collapsed and died. Heart failure is a relatively common cause of death in Qatar, where lifestyles and working conditions can be very demanding.
Qatar has come under intense scrutiny in recent months over its treatment of workers preparing for the World Cup. Earlier this year, Amnesty International released a report detailing how migrant workers in Qatar are being treated “like slaves”.
The group has called on FIFA to ensure that all workers involved in the FIFA World Cup 2022 are treated fairly and given decent working conditions.
Second journalists who have died while covering Qatar’s World Cup:
Jassim al-Majed – a Qatari journalist who was working for Al Jazeera, died while covering a match between Qatar and Saudi Arabia in December 2010.
Fahad Mashal – a Yemeni journalist who was working for Al Jazeera, also died while covering the same match between Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
Conclusion
It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of another journalist who was covering Qatar’s World Cup. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the journalist, who have suffered a great loss. We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
